Orange Thrower by Kirsty Marillier

About:

It’s one of those suburbs where the houses all match, the gardens all match, the cars, the dogs, and the people all match. But in the stucco sprawl of Paradise, the Petersen family don’t quite match.

While her folks are back in Johannesburg, Zadie is holding the family fort. This means keeping her little sis away from bush doofs—and smiling when her nice white neighbours try to touch her hair. Then, in the middle of the night, someone starts pelting their house with oranges. Just once. Then twice. Then night after night after night. Maybe it’s nothing. Or maybe someone in Paradise wants them out.

tutaj/هناك (here/there) by Bernadette Fam and Monika Pieprzyk

About:

How do we begin to describe growing up as a first-gen Australian? First, there are the smells. Not sweat or BO, but the smells of spices, musk and home which you think are normal until you reach high school and somebody passes you a deodorant can. Nowadays you realise you can't even spell your grandparents names, let alone remember them. Life is a bungle.

Through interdisciplinary performance and cross-cultural dialogue tutaj/هناك (here/there) dissects the intricacies of cultural connection and pickle jars. Egyptians and Poles have more in common than we thought in this earnest, funny, and sometimes heart-breaking quest to relinquish shame at feeling neither here nor there.

Lady Tabouli by James Elazzi

About:

Lady Tabouli is James Elazzi‘s unflinching clash of cultures and a searing look at how expectations can eat away at us until we decide to change the rules.

It’s the day of his nephew’s baptism and Danny is godfather. Living back home with his religious Lebanese mother, he’s thrown into the maelstrom of preparations and high emotions: God forbid this christening comes second to the Boustanis’! The family can’t afford to lose face, especially with Danny recently and mysteriously calling off his engagement. But secrets will out, and amidst the sugared almonds and balloon deliveries, Danny discovers the true colours of those to whom he’s closest. Where do you turn when the people you love refuse to accept the truth?
